Your Opportunity:

Operating 24/7, the DSC Pre/Post Analytics department in the Southern Alberta Hub Lab plays a key role in the delivery of customer-focused laboratory services and is vital to the operation of the laboratory. As a team member in this fast-paced and physically demanding environment, you will utilize skills in specimen distribution and processing, communication, customer service, and data entry. The department relies heavily on teamwork to meet operational requirements. Position is rotating evenings with weekend rotation. Functions, responsibilities and requirements of this position include: Abide by the APL Values, Kindness, Inclusion, Innovation, Agility and Accuracy. High endurance for standing and the ability to frequently push/pull a rolling cart weighing up to 200 lbs. Lifting specimen transport containers weighing up to 40 lbs. Loading and unloading of dumbwaiters with specimen transport containers. Accurate transcription of patient demographics and tests into the laboratory information system. Labelling specimens and requisitions Receiving, processing and sorting patient specimens and requisitions. Maintaining laboratory equipment Preparing specimens for transfer/referral Answering telephone inquiries and transferring as required Provide high quality service to clients APL in an effective, efficient, and safe manner. Ability to listen, comprehend and respond to or relay information, directions, or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate and concise manner. Assisting with the training of staff and students. Receptive, adaptable, and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. Other Information: As workload demands and operational requirements shift, the location, dates and/or hours of work may be changed.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Capable of standing for prolonged periods of time and having manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds consistently and repetitively and to moving carts on wheels, up to 200 lbs. Consistently and repeatedly loading and unloading dumbwaiters with specimen transport containers weighing up to 40 lbs. High level of attention to detail and organization skills. Accurate transcription of patient demographics and tests into the laboratory information system. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills while promoting a team environment. Basic computer knowledge with proficiency in data entry into Epic-Beaker. Demonstrated initiative, good judgment, and attention to detail, with effective time management with the ability to set priorities. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to assume responsibility. Good organizational skills and effective time management with the ability to set priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Current experience working in Specimen Processing/Pre and Post Analytics is an asset. Ability to lead self through change, interpret workflow visuals and respond appropriately to meet key performance indicators. Initiative, analytical thinking and problem solving. Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Ability to give and receive constructive feedback. Competency in Microsoft Office Suite.
