Your Opportunity:
The Genetics & Genomics team at the University of Alberta Hospital has a great opportunity for a Laboratory Scientist II (LSII) in the Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. This laboratory provides a combined service which includes the provincial newborn screening for rare treatable conditions that benefit from early intervention, as well as biochemical genetics testing for diagnosis and monitoring of hereditary metabolic disorders. As an LSII, you will support the Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics Laboratory in Edmonton as part of a collaborative team. The LSII provides planning and coordination of research and development activities to introduce new testing methodologies and platforms. Including expertise in the operation and maintenance of instrumentation and methodologies, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), immunoassays, enzyme assays, spectrophotometry and fluorometry. Another key responsibility of the position is to provide advanced technical oversight to maintain compliance with accreditation standards, perform advanced troubleshooting and participate in the development of laboratory staff.

As a Laboratory Scientist II, you will be responsible for participation in the initiation of new approaches to testing, researching the viability of given projects, facilitating methodology development and conducting advanced or complex patient tests. In addition, you will be involved in the implementation of new technologies and instrumentation and develop training procedures for new or revised programs, technology or instrumentation.

Completion of a Master of Medical Laboratory Science degree or a related scientific discipline.
Additional Required Qualifications:Master of Science degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, chemistry or related discipline is required. A comparable combination of education and demonstrated method development experience may be considered. Minimum 5 years of laboratory experience in biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, analytical chemistry, or related discipline with extensive experience using GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, and spectrophotometry. Demonstrated experience in leadership and project management, test method development and validation with mass spectrometry technologies. Advanced knowledge of clinical laboratory validation standards and statistical techniques. Experience with enzyme testing would be valuable. Competency with quality control, maintenance and troubleshooting activities. Experience developing standard operating procedures and training. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office. The LSII will need to be self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills to work both independently and as part of a team. Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, planning, and decision-making skills are required. To meet project timelines, strong attention to detail as well as time management skills with the ability to prioritize work under stressful conditions are required. English fluency with exceptional verbal and written skills.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience with computer hardware and software setup and maintenance. Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis and related software including spreadsheet applications, such as Excel. Experience working with vendors. Participation in scientific publications. Previous experience in a healthcare setting and experience working with automated sample handlers.
