Your Opportunity:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist I position supports cross coverage within the Newborn Screening/Biochemical Genetics Laboratory within the Genetics and Genomics program and the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, located at the University of Alberta Hospital within the Edmonton Zone of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). APL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Primary Care Alberta, delivering high quality, responsive diagnostic laboratory services to Albertans across the healthcare system. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will perform a variety of manual and automated assays to produce accurate, timely, and high quality diagnostic results. This role requires proficiency in a broad range of specialized laboratory techniques, including mass spectrometry (GC, MS/MS), high performance liquid chromatography, immunoassays, nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), fragment analysis, and next generation sequencing (NGS). The successful candidate will maintain legible and accurate laboratory records; perform routine instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting; verify patient and quality control results; and actively participate in quality control and quality assurance activities. In addition, the technologist will contribute to a collaborative team environment by assisting with the training of new employees, students, and residents, while working with a consistently high level of attention to detail, accuracy, and precision in a challenging and dynamic laboratory environment.

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
Additional Required Qualifications:The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of molecular theory, quality control principles, laboratory instrumentation, laboratory information systems (LIS), and laboratory accreditation requirements. Proven aptitude and proficiency in both manual and automated laboratory techniques, with a high level of attention to detail, is required. The ability to identify testing or procedural anomalies and take appropriate action to ensure timely and accurate resolution is essential. Current clinical laboratory experience and demonstrated knowledge in these techniques is preferred. Strong organizational, time management, and problem solving skills are required, along with sound decision making and troubleshooting abilities. Proficiency with Windows based computer applications, including Microsoft Office programs and mathematical calculations, is required. You are an organized, independent worker and a strong team player committed to providing quality patient care. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to work collaboratively, build and maintain effective working relationships, facilitate teamwork, resolve conflict, and manage change. You are approachable, reliable, and able to represent Alberta Precision Laboratories, a wholly owned subsidiary of Primary Care Alberta, in a respectful, professional, and courteous manner.
Preferred Qualifications:Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems and general computer application is an asset. Ability to do advanced maintenance with minimal supervision is an asset.
