Does genetics excite you? Are you a strong team player committed to delivering quality patient care? Here’s your chance to join the Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team at Alberta Precision Laboratories! G&G provides specialized genetic testing for a broad range of conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. This Medical Laboratory Technologist I position is within Cancer Cytogenomics Laboratory at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calgary. This department is responsible for cytogenetic-based cancer genetic testing for Southern Alberta. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist I, you will be responsible for tissue culture activities including setting up tissue cell cultures on bone marrows, bloods, and tumors, monitoring cultures, and harvesting cultures for cytogenetic analysis. You are organized, able to maintain parallel timed workflows and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment when required. You may additionally be responsible for but not limited to reagent preparation, manual cell preparation, and supporting accreditation preparedness activities and other general tasks as required. You can ensure accurate patient and sample identification, sample integrity and suitability, document culture activities, troubleshoot processes and notify appropriate senior staff members of unusual occurrences. You must be able to operate, maintain and perform troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. You can follow and are aware of safety precautions including WHMIS and participate in the maintenance of a safe working environment. You can monitor department supply inventory and act appropriately to maintain. You can participate in the training and orientation of students and staff.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience with basic laboratory equipment and sterile technique. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office-based software applications. Fluency in the English language (reading, writing and verbal). Strong attention to detail as well as superior organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

2 years of recent diagnostic laboratory experience. Experience in cell tissue culture. Experience with Connect Care. Post-secondary education in Genetics or molecular biology.
