Your Opportunity:

The Northern Lights Health Center’s laboratory is a 24/7 operation that provides essential laboratory services which offer the opportunity to be part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment. Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor or Manager, this position will provide technical leadership in planning, organizing, teaching and managing quality services performed in Transfusion Medicine and Hematology departments. Within this framework, duties will include monitoring daily processes and taking appropriate action to ensure expected services are delivered in a coordinated, consistent, and timely manner. The Laboratory Technologist II will also be responsible for recognizing and resolving operational, technical, equipment and quality issues as well as recommending and justifying necessary/desired improvements in technical equipment, protocols and personnel development. The Laboratory Technologist II will be responsible for developing and maintaining standardized training and competency of staff; administering Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs; and assisting with recruitment and selection of staff. Supervision and leadership will be provided to a team of Laboratory Technologists and Laboratory Assistants. The successful applicant must be organized; an independent worker and strong team player committed to providing quality patient care. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay. Relocation assistance may be available for a Return of Service Agreement.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) II, you will coordinate the day-to-day operations and the quality control function of the laboratory. You may have advanced technical knowledge or are the lead responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of Laboratory Information System (LIS) support, site education, quality assurance or laboratory research programs. Your responsibilities may include coordinating, prioritizing, monitoring and assigning work to MLT l's, providing technical advice, problem solving and trouble shooting on a variety of laboratory instruments. In addition, you will participate in the technical aspects of the laboratory, ensuring the performance of standard and specialized procedures.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of five years of full time Laboratory experience in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine. Extensive knowledge of blood products and components and associated processes. Experience with quality control, reagent and instrument work ups. Experience with procedure development and review. Experience with technical troubleshooting of instruments, equipment, reagents and quality control. Demonstrated experience with method or equipment evaluation including statistical analysis. Training and/or demonstrated experience related to quality improvement, conflict resolution and customer service. Experience with LIS user acceptance testing. Experience with development and supervision of effective teams. Extensive experience in use of computer systems and software applications. Experience with Accreditation standards, implementation and addressing deficiencies. Demonstrated experience and or knowledge of Laboratory Safety practices. Ability to give and receive constructive criticism. Organizational, time management and sound decision-making skills. Demonstrated experience and professional development of leadership skills. Previous experience with Epic (Beaker) and general computer applications is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience operating and troubleshooting the following equipment is preferred: DXH 600 (Beckman Coulter), ACL Elite Pro, Ortho Vision (Transfusion Medicine), MTS Gel System TM. Previous Medical Laboratory Technologist II experience preferred.
