As a member of the interdisciplinary team this position is responsible for working day and evening shifts on both weekdays and weekends. Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor or Manager, and under the direction of the Vulcan Medical Laboratory Technologist II, the MLT will be responsible for providing exemplary patient care by applying the regional policies and procedures. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to highly complex procedures and activities within the laboratory department. In accordance with Health Information Act (HIA), Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) and other privacy legislation in effect the incumbent shall comply at all times with APL / AHS’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies. This position may be filled by a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist or alternatively a Combined Laboratory X-Ray Technologist.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Proven ability to work within a computer based environment. Demonstrate proficiency in core laboratory theory including hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, specimen procurement and handling, and transfusion medicine dispensing by applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Must be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients/clients, families, staff, interdisciplinary team members and personnel from other departments in a fast pace changing environment. Must be proficient at phlebotomy: this role is called on often to perform phlebotomy on all ages of patients, and neonatal skin punctures. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment in accordance with standard operating procedures. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills showing attention to detail and accuracy. Demonstrated ability to organize, set priorities and multitask. Proven ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills, especially troubleshooting skills Ability to facilitate change positively by encouraging others and accepting change within the workplace. Completion of accredited Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) program, alternatively accredited Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologist (CLXT) program with eligibility for registration with regulatory collage either CMLTA or ACCLXT.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year experience as a MLT or CLXT within Rural Zone laboratory is an asset.
